Kipp’s goal set off a flurry of Pioneer goals as Denver piled on five more goals to end the quarter up 6-0. The first several minutes of the game went on without a goal, before Sloane Kipp notched the first goal with 6:06 left to play in the opening quarter. UNC kept the momentum moving in their direction with another two quick scores to open the fourth quarter, closing the gap to within two and showing real potential to climb right back into the drivers seat. Although Northwestern's Rhatigan bolstered the scorecard twice for the ‘Cats early in the third quarter, the Heels felt some life breathed back into their game with their first back-to-back scores of the contest from Caitlyn Wurzburger and Nicole Humphrey. North Carolina made key halftime adjustments to even things up at the draw, giving them more opportunities for offensive possessions in the second half. Both teams traded goals twice to head into halftime 8-4 in Northwestern's favor. Northwestern chipped in four more goals, giving them a 6-1 advantage before Godine got her second on a player-up opportunity with 6:53 remaining in the half. Bohlig's score came with 38 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, quickly followed up by Hailey Rhatigan's first of the day, giving the ‘Cats a 2-0 headed into the second.
